The Community Acupuncture Movement
The Community Acupuncture movement began in 2002 with Working Class Acupuncture (WCA) in Portland, OR as a response to the growing need for affordable health care that is an alternative to our current health care system. Our population is a whole is over-medicated and not getting a better as a result of the massive amount of medications we are taking. Add to this the sky-rocketing cost of conventional health care driven by an insurance market that is largely profit-driven, and you have a health care crisis that needs an alternative solution.
Acupuncture has always been an alternative to the predominant health care system, however it has only been accessible to those who can pay $80 - $100 per session. What WCA and the clinics that follow its model have done is found a way to deliver the ancient medicine of acupuncture to the modern population in a way that preserves the efficacy of the medicine while significantly reducing the cost. Community acupuncture works because the practitioners focus on doing simple yet effective treatments, and our clients don't mind stepping out from the private one-on-one model into receiving acupuncture in a large group setting. Our collective goal is simple: to make a humble living while helping everyday people with their health concerns.
