iRest® Yoga Nidra Meditation
Unlike the typical Yoga class in which various poses are practiced, in a Yoga Nidra class there are no poses other than a comfortable sitting or lying down position. This is because Yoga Nidra is a meditative practice that is completely effortless, deeply relaxing, and significantly transformative.
But the absence of poses does not imply that Yoga Nidra is any less yogic! Yoga Nidra is derived from the very heart of ancient Yoga and to this day it continues to release negative emotions and thought patterns, calm the nervous system, and develop a deep capacity to respond adequately and authentically to every situation encountered in life.
iRest® Yoga Nidra refers to the modernized version of ancient Yoga Nidra developed by yogi and psychologist, Dr. Richard Miller. iRest stands for Integrative Restoration and implies a practice that assists in resting the "I". Research has shown that iRest® Yoga Nidra effectively reduces symptoms of PTSD, depression, anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, and chemical dependency (and more research is currently underway).
What is an iRest Yoga Nidra session with Shira Oz-Sinai like? A typical session begins with a few moments to settle into a comfortable position and open to the senses. Then, Shira shares a series of invitations for noticing the body, breath, emotions, thoughts, and images. There's no actual doing in a Yoga Nidra practice. No wrong or right. No religious spin. No cult. No special clothing. Instead, there's the invitation to notice and welcome whatever is present. Yoga Nidra is a place to meet your Self just as you are. And you cannot beat the by-product of practicing awareness: the body relaxes, tension dissolves, old traumas and emotional/mental challenges ease and resolve--all on their own. It's not magic; it's the practice of Yoga Nidra.
Because iRest Yoga Nidra is such a powerful healing tool, The United States Military has adopted it for returning active duty soldiers and veterans since 2006 as a way to heal from trauma and live a fulfilling life. In addition to being offered to the general public, iRest Yoga Nidra is now shared with diverse populations such as students at schools, at-risk youth, cancer treatment patients, prisoners, and more across the United States and abroad. So come on by and try it for yourself!
Shira offers Yoga Nidra every Sunday from 6:00pm to 7:00pm at OurSpace. Please visit her website for more information and/or contact her directly to save a spot in the next iRest Yoga Nidra meditation session! People welcome. No experience necessary. No physical exercise involved.
